IP Ratings

Ingress Protection (IP) ratings refer to the level of protection offered by an electrical enclosure against solids and liquids, as dictated by IEC 60529. IP rating also determines connectors that may be utilized in the final design of the controller.

For Vertiq’s customers, the level of protection required is dependent on the application and operating environment. Since Vertiq’s electronics are tightly integrated with the motor, hitting a specific IP rating is largely a mechanical design challenge, with the electrical design reacting to mechanical constraints. Higher IP ratings typically correlate with additional physical protections, which may add weight and cost to the product. Drone companies must balance these drawbacks with the benefit of a well-protected controller.

Vertiq's modules come with a minimum standard protection of IP43. We have settled with this level of protection because Vertiq’s stock modules have been designed to accommodate industry-standard sizes and use cases.

Many customers need Vertiq technology to survive operations in extreme environments, while managing the propulsion system’s size, weight, and thermal distribution. We work with clients to increase the IP rating as necessary. The most common ways to boost IP rating are covering exposed components, gasketing electronics, and conformal coating the controller. When enclosing electronics, IP rating reduces the possibility of cooling by convection. In this case, we need to rely more heavily on heat dissipation via the module's body, and look for electronic components with a higher heat threshold, ensuring the PCB's maximum design for heat transfer.

Vertiq can make motors with a rating ~IP47 and electronics with a rating of ~IP67. Such work requires custom development. If you are interested in learning more about how Vertiq can help you overcome your IP challenges, please reach out and we are happy to assist.
